I was kind of surprised when I went inside the coliseum, to find it didn’t have a floor. Sword-and-sandal epics had led me to expect a wide Sandy circle. It’s also smaller than one imagines.

I think the coolest thing about it was that they had different flooring setups for different events. Need a gladiator match? Use the sand floor. Need some trapdoors to raise up surprise lions and shit? We got you. Want to do a fucking boat battle? We got flooring that lets us flood this motherfucker.

I kind of like the idea of it as a living building.
