quote [ Aubrey Beardsley was tall and slim, with chisled facial features that surrounded an almost permenant smile. His signature short and trim curtain cut hair was always neatly combed through, at a time when bohemians were known to sport messy hair. He carried with him an undeniable intelligence of a thoroughly well-read Englishman, and he wasn’t shy about his talents. ]
Oscar Wilde, Oscar Wilde, can you tell me where you've been?

Discovered this guy when I was pretty young.
Coles Bookstores (which I am pretty sure don't exist - or if they do, not in Canada) used to have a ton of discount books on a table or two. and I got a book on Beardsly when I was 13 or 14. My older cousin had gotten me into art nouveau around the same time. I also discovered Gibson Girls around the same time which I enjoyed as both art and *otherwise*. Always really enjoyed art by the Pre Raphaelite movement as well... Anyway, that's still on my shelves somewhere. I remember that I got a book about pornography around the same time. (lavishly a rather lavishly illustrated book that's cover had a picture on the cover of a young lady on a swing, legs slightly parted with nothing hiding what was beneath.) Sadly my parents used to occasionally raid my room when I was out and it got grabbed. I dunno if booksellers today would sell that to someone who was basically a kid. - maybe they wouldn't give a damn. |
