In the weapons demo movie, why is there a smoking barrel? I thought it didn't use chemicals or, you know, fire.

It's most likely what's left of a plasma-fied "wad" that maintains current across the barrel and allows the projectile to accelerate all the way down the barrel. TODO: link to Wikipedia article here.

I think the old Disney movies about space travel showed magnetic slingshots hurling little packets of stuff from the moon.
