Move over PC, the Commodore 64 is the hot new computer for 2019

quote [ There was much excitement back in 2017 when a C64 Mini got announced. However, the version that hit store shelves wasn't without its problems, most notably the poor joystick. It did include 64 games and could run BASIC, but the keyboard didn't function meaning you needed to plug another one in to type. An almost great release then, but not the end of the story. Retro Games Ltd., who gave us the C64 Mini, this week revealed we're getting a follow-up device called "THEC64". This time it's a full-size Commodore 64 complete with a working keyboard! ]

In a world of fun and fantasy, and ever changing views, and computer terminology, Commodore is news.

Are you keeping up with the Commodore? 'Cause the Commodore is keeping up with you!

Commodore 64 Commercial: Are You Keeping Up? HQ

Maybe in 2020 we'll get a portable THECSX-64 to replace all our smart phones:
Are you keeping up with the Commodore: ((STEREO)) Commercial song (+ Subs ENG/ESP)

* THEC64 Facebook World Wide Web homepage (like, subscribe, and LOAD"*",8,1)
* The closed IndieGoGo site for the project from before the Mini

THEC64 will presumably be emulated, but if you want a real new C64 there's the ULTIMATE-64, a 2019 FPGA-based motherboard with USB, ethernet, WiFi, flash storage, HDMI, and dual-SID support for stereo chiptunes. You'll have to supply your own case and keyboard, or you can build them out of Lego.

Jumpman, Impossible Mission and The Castles of Dr. Creep. I burned out my retinas on a tiny CRT TV playing these classics....

For me it was Jumpman, Boulder Dash, and the Olympic Games. Crazy how I can still viscerally remember getting angry over Jumpman and some little asterisk looking thing.

Hey - they had the original gold box AD&D games on the C64. Curse of the Azure Bonds, Pool Of Radiance, The 3 Krynn adventures, etc. Also loved me "a Bards Tale" as well.

Had Pool of Radiance on the Laser 128. I'm disappointed I can't play all the old gold box games on my phone.

I think the C64 version of Impossible Mission is the best version there is. Well, apart from the crusty voice sample - "Destroy him, my robots!" - which the SID chip struggles with. It makes it sound like a sample from a vaporwave track!

Castles of Dr. Creep is a great pick, pretty underrated but one of my top few games on the C64. I can see why your retinas hurt playing it, it's all high-contrast bright colours on black and a full playthrough takes at least an hour. I'm surprised you don't still see a faint outline of the first level even now when you close your eyes.

Yup, I've been keeping up with Commodore alright. I play a lot of retro stuff anyway, but 2018 had so many new C64 and Amiga titles released (50 or more for each system) that I gamed more on Commodore than PC this year. Do new games on old systems even count as retro? A lot of these titles were as good as the best games of the classic era.

Indie Retro News has a handy roundup of the year in C64, mostly focusing on games that were released in physical format for real C64s. The C64 Mini (and the upcoming The C64) are a real gamechanger though: there's going to be a whole new crowd looking for the latest C64 games.

I'll stick with emulation though, it's the games I like and not the hardware. I didn't have a C64 as a kid and it's not a nostalgia thing for me. VICE is the default emulator if you want to try some of these games out. I use C64 Forever, which gives a nice frontend for emulation (and if you get Amiga Forever too it opens both platforms in one program). You can get Amiga Forever for a fiver at the moment on Groupees, along with a couple of recent Dungeon Master / Eye of the Beholder action RPGs - an absolute bargain!
