Like a Fine Tobacco, the Pipe Smoking Revival Has Been a Slow Burn

quote [ I rarely saw my grandfather with a pipe. My mother didn’t like him smoking around us kids, and he respected that. When he passed away, my family donated his pipes, thinking no one wanted them—which at the time was true. It would be three more years before a chance meeting with a friend at his favorite tobacco shop turned me, a few weeks after my 35th birthday, into a pipe smoker. ]

As a long-term tobacco user... there is indeed something of an art-form to pipe smoking. I smoke cigarettes hurriedly, in between jobs, mind consumed by a task list - and then it's time to toss the butt and rush, rush, rush again - or else idly, my addiction driving my hands and breath with automatic precision, no conscious effort required.

With a pipe, I slow down and savor the occasion. The rituals of packing and lighting require thought and care, not for snatched breaks or idle hands but for time and effort deliberately taken, for smoke tasted, for pleasure felt and enjoyed. This is tobacco as it should be, smoked less, enjoyed more.

Sometimes I like to use a water pipe/bong, too just smoke a small portion of tobacco. It's slightly smoother, but you don't use as much tobacco.
