quote [ “Windowing and desktop environments are a solution looking for a problem,” said Robert Lefkowits, director of software services for Infocorp, in the fall of 1985. “Users aren’t really looking for any kind of windowing environment to solve problems. Users are not expressing a need or desire for it.” ]
Features a nice hardware intro on the Wintel principle.

Here‘s the author himself talking in the comments:
Parents and their old software… oh, man. I struggled for years to find ways to let my dad keep using his WordPerfect 5.x for DOS. Our latest problem has come since he upgraded to Windows 10 and his trusty Outlook Express doesn’t work anymore. He doesn’t really understand *why* he can’t keep using what he’s always used, and I know he’s convinced that I’m just being stubborn in trying to force him to use all this new-fangled stuff. He’s at an age now where learning new things doesn’t come easily, and it kind of breaks my heart to subject him to this, but what can I do? Leave him with Windows XP and see how many viruses he can collect? … and actually you still see complaints about Dosbox having trouble to emulate certain printer or networking hardware because that's what doctor's offices use to keep their trusty systems running. |
