quote [ “I mean, I wanted access to companies to read some source code, I wanted to learn, I wanted to see how far it could go—that was it. It was really just intellectual curiosity. I didn’t want money—if I wanted money, I would’ve taken all the money that was there. But, I mean, I get it—what it turned into, it’s regrettable.” ]
Spiralling hacker story. Similar to the Valve hacking incident.

That’s a shame. He could have had a bright* future.
*it is, but being banned from an industry you love sucks Maybe a small company would take him though |

If I managed a small company (or a big one) and my financial security was based on my employees programming instead of using my VPN connections to explore what other companies were developing (for "educational" purposes), I would still be reluctant to hire him.

Yep. Even if Valve doesn't Greenlight him.
Perhaps it's not the point of article, but it doesn't describe him as actually creating anything original from scratch. It's all tinkering or piggy-backing on what other people have made. And while related, the compulsion to spend sixteen hours a day coding and the compulsion to spend sixteen hours a day combing through LANs for text files with passwords are different compulsions. And probably mutually exclusive. |
