Speed Queen: The Life (and Death) of Internet Commenters’ Favorite Washing Machine

quote [ In my six years of reviewing washing machines, I’ve never once seriously considered recommending a Speed Queen top-loader. This shouldn’t be controversial: Every publication that tests appliances has years of controlled test results proving the superiority of front-loading washers. So why are most washer reviews’ comments sections filled with Speed Queen fans claiming otherwise? ]

The notion that anyone would care enough about washing machines to be part of a internet commenting community is fascinating to me. I guess it is the cyber group formation equivalent of Rule 34.

“I wonder if Speed Queen realizes that by cheapening their design that they alienated 90% of their customer base.”

Seem like good business advice to me.

"Pallas, and several others with knowledge of lots of different types of washers, said that old-school top-loaders are the best at cleaning grimy, dirt-caked work clothes. That’s actually something that the industry-standard tests do not currently measure"

Correct on every count. My washing machine must accept any article of clothing no matter how soiled and give back clean clothes in one cycle. Front loaders can't always do that.

But, more to the point of the article: people in general have proven time and again that they don't care about serviceability or maintenance. When they seek reliability, what they mean is "doesn't ever break no matter how much I ignore it", not "easy to fix" nor "will run forever if you do this simple regular ritual". It's a stupid, shortsighted, and foolish concept, but it is what it is.

So when a company builds mechanical objects, and adds all the important maintenance features, and the customers who buy it never maintain it and run it into the ground and then bitch endlessly about unreliable junk while buying a new one anyways. If I were a company and saw this, I'd start asking why I'm making it maintainable if it's never maintained, why not save a few bucks and get rid of the maintenance features? Voila, one disposable consumerism culture, and not because of corporate greed, but because customers actions show this is what they really want.

Apple discovered this with their products. Geeks want to tinker with their computer; the rest of the world does not.

I buy $450 top loaders with the full post center agitator... Why? They are cheaper. Yes they are disposable.

I don't need to spend $1000+++ dollars on a front loader with more buttons than my car, cycles I'll never use and a steam feature that while I hear is the tits.... I don't miss by not having.

That said... I'm really handy. I fix my washers, dryers, etc... The problem I run into is that I usually have a sun $30 part that fixes it one time. The next fix is usually a chain of parts that add up to 75% of the purchase price of a new washer, so new washer it is....
