This is kind of related to the Civilization article down the page. In that scenario with competing groups, I argued that it makes sense to try to outgrow your competitors into extinction. But if you can get past grouping and work as a global unit, a rising tide lifts all boats.
Sadly, I don't see that happening anytime soon. The globalist push post-WWII could have moved us in that direction, but the benefits weren't distributed equitably. With an almost universal backlash amongst Western civilization that's brought us the Brexit and Trump, it'll be decades before society will be willing to retry globalism. |

UBI would be a good start I think. If we could make that happen. Remember, the tragedy of George W. Bush brought us Obama. If the progressives could make some serious gains in the Democratic Party it's possible we could get real progress from the backlash of the current administration.
I feel like we're reaching a point in human history where we either make serious progress as a social species or we don't get to play anymore. |
