Maybe in the past companies more often owned their own premises, whereas nowadays they lease from a landlord. I haven't read the article.

Absolutely true, now a store will probably stay in a single location for only a few years. Doesn't take away that it looks so much more charming though. I wouldn't necessarily like to see it happen with chain stores, but rather with the smaller shop owners.
