Bill Browder on Twitter

quote [ “Not only did Putin add me to the Interpol list, but the US simultaneously revoked my visa. @jaynordlinger explains https://t.co/d8KskJ5CTK” ]

Just a mini post, update to what I think is the most important story of this year

Yikes! Do you have any impartial reports explaining why his US visa was revoked? And who was responsible for the revoking?

I fear the worst, but I'm not entirely ready to trust his reading of events unverified. That is to say, I have no doubt the Russians want him neutralized, I'm just not yet convinced the Americans are actively complicit to achieving this.

If the Magnitsky Act comes up for repeal during Trumps time in office, well, then we *know*.

There’s been a good npr story about this a few months ago.
Basically they met with Trump Jr. about some Hilary stuff and nothing seems to have come about it. I think they wanted to do a quid pro quo- we hurt the Hilary campaign and you repeal the menski act. I can’t remember if this was the act that was blocking Purim from getting his ol money.

Thanks. No, I mean, I understand the basic gist of that meeting, and what is implied about the Trump campaign. I was asking about Browder. The US government enacted the Magnitsky act and recently asked him to testify in front of the Senate committee. One imagines they are basically sympathetic, even if the current WH have opposing views - not ideologically, of course, but as a payment to the Russians for services rendered.

So, I don't see a reason why the US government would revoke a visa just because the Russians want them to. If anything the Russians wanting them to would just make it less likely. And it seems unlikely the WH could move unilaterally on this, not while McCain is still kicking at any rate.

edit:

Because if Trump did try it, it would end up in the news, as it just has for some Chinese billionare dude: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/23/trumps-call-for-chinese-dissident-to-be-deported-based-on-beijing-letter-report

Russians found a way to put Browder on an Interpol list without review. Visa suspension might have been automatic from that. No comment from State Dept.

State Dept needs to make up some bullshit.

The "bullshit" may well be that he even had a visa. The US says he didn't. In any event, it's a tempest in teapot, and he's fine for travel into the US.

"Browder tweeted on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin placed him on an Interpol travel list and the U.S. had simultaneously revoked his visa. His comments drew outrage from congressional Republicans and Democrats who immediately demanded answers from American officials.

On Monday, however, the U.S. government said Browder has never held a U.S. visa and that he was cleared for travel last week."

If this is "the most important story of this year" then wake me up in 2018.

I thought this story would slip by but it looks like it's gaining attention. Senators on both sides now asking for a look into why this happened.

And even more telling than revoking one of Putin's top 10 hated list visa is that they still haven't implemented the new sanctions ..

Trump Just Blew Off a Deadline for Implementing Russian Sanctions He Approved
Lawmakers worry the president is planning to ignore parts of the law he signed under congressional pressure.

This is from the 11th but still nothing.
