Game Over, Uwe Boll

quote [ The man known as the world’s worst director is now retired and running a Vancouver restaurant. But he’s still not done waiting for the world to give him his due. ]

I'm going to be in a very extreme minority here, but I adore Boll's films. Not in a technical, storytelling, visual, thematic, or artistic sense... but an endlessly entertaining one.

I always hear people that say things to the effect of "great movies make you think", and Uwe's movies do just that. Even if what you are thinking is "Haha! Holy shit what was he thinking?" or "Why on earth would he splice decades old video game footage into the middle of a gunfight?"

Many of his films are so bad that I am left in awe... they are awful in the most literal sense. But not for a second have I considered turning one of them off.

House of the Dead is one of the most genuinely enjoyable films ever made, if "good" isn't one of the criteria you require out of the movies you watch. I watch it a handful of times a year, and will do so until I die. Jurgen Prochnow chews the fuck out of the scenery. It's god damned amazing and he still can't keep up with Clint Howard's brilliance. Those two performances alone make it worth a watch.

In contrast, Requiem for a Dream is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and I will never watch it again.

So, that said (poorly), this sort of breaks my heart that he is finally done with film. He got to make way more than anyone of his caliber had any right too, and I was absolutely fine with that. A lot of bad movies are made every year, but there was something genuinely special about Boll's many failures.

Sucks he got into the restaurant business though, because while there are people like me who truly enjoy watching terrible films, the same can't really be said for food.
