James Earl Jones Reads Frederick Douglass' Historic 4th of July Speech

quote [ Born into slavery around 1818, Douglass became a key leader of the abolitionist movement. On July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York, he gave one of his most famous speeches, "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro." ]

This seems like a good thing to remember today. Douglass gave this speech eleven years before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Both Jones and Douglass kick ass.

I cut off the Amy Goodman intro; she can be tiresome.

Good point. I think I tend to imagine Douglass in his later years with that awesome white hair and beard.
