At some point during the discussion, “That’s your education talking,” will be said, derogatorily, as a general dismissal of everything I said. They truly believe this is a legitimate response because to them education is not to be trusted. Education is the enemy of fundamentalism because fundamentalism, by its very nature, is not built on facts. ] You aren't from around here are ya boy?

Same problem as conspiracy theories. And probably originates in the same place - fear. Namely fear that things are uncontrollable & ultimately without a bias in their favor, therefore even a dickbag invisible sky pervert who makes their lives miserable is preferable to the alternative.
Which is one of the few ways in which game theory is actually comforting, but trying to explain that to my grandparents on a rural farm was pretty futile.
