A fun experiment, but really kind of silly.
It's no secret that painters of Vermeer's time used the camera obscura to project and reproduce live scenes for their artworks. As to whether Vermeer used such techniques to 'photographically' reproduce color, we certainly can't rule out the possibility that he was simply an amazingly skilled painter.

There is still a lot of controversy around the Hockney-Falco thesis. This artwork goes a long way to show that we can't rule out the hypothesis that Vermeer wasn't an amazingly skilled painter, just an assiduous hack with a camera lucida.

It reminds me of how scientists are using modern technology to explain how the pyramids are built. We may never ever know how they actually piled those stones up.

It's possible that Vermeer just had savant-like photographic memory.

Interesting that he basically built the equivalent of a camera lucida. Wikipedia says that it had been invented by that time, but that there is no evidence that anyone built one. Maybe this is evidence that someone did?
