I used to work at a diner as a busboy that was connected to a bar through a door way on the entrance to the kitchen. Next to the door way on the bar side was the juke box. I played take five a lot on it because it was 1981, and the only crap other than brubeck was duran duran, despeche mode, wha, culture club, and hall and oats. Ugh. But when my brother, who was over 21 visited, he'd buy me drinks and pass them to me through the door way.

I first heard it on a plane trip back in the 90s that had headphone jacks in the armrest for a few channels. 7 or 8 songs on repeat, 3-hour flight, nothing better to do. Take 5 and the Night Chicago Died got burned into my brain that day, I can't recall what else was playing.

Occasionally a song will pop into my head or come on the car radio and I realize it was exactly what I needed. In certain moods there's something cathartic about the right melody at the right time.
