I get the reasoning behind it, and I don't necessarily disagree, but at some point it feels like execution would be a more humane punishment.

Turns out that since he's a juvenile, any remaining fees can be expunged after ten years. So there's that, at least.

Yeah, given that can presumably be 'gotten off for good behavior' in a decade or so, I really don't see a huge problem here. There was a burn ban. It was some pretty nice public land (not to mention a town as well). Let the judgment at least semi-reflect the damage. He'll likely be 'free' by the time he's 30 ...

Oh good, I was afraid the judge would go soft because of his age and only order him to pay a mere couple of million.
