So now I am finished uni, got a 1st Msc Comp Sci. Was supposed to do a PhD but they weren't paying enough so now I build clouds for SAP and am about to drop a massive commit on Openstack (cool open source project) for them. Prof still hounding me to do PhD so might do next year part time.

I miss "the negs".

That is, I miss being able to comment on a post, without actually commenting on a post, by simply going to it's "negative equivalent" and placing (posting) a comment that I might feel is relevant, but that no coherent, real thinking, member of the site would either appreciate or entertain. Leading to a discussion by like minded individuals that would escalate into guaranteed absurdity (most likely) absurdity, or possible [MAYHEM], etc.
As it stands, If I go to the "Neg page" of a post I am looking at...
I wind up here.
Not the worst case.
It could redirect me to AOL...!
However, I stand by my original whiny, cranky, intent...

That's why I'm considering it. I removed the negs in the hopes of encouraging comradary on the topside, but frankly i don't believe it worked. The negs provided a medium for a counterculture movement that often resulted in much more playfulness on the topside.

If anything, I think there's too much camaraderie. Why else would people think they needed to make fake accounts just to express unpopular opinions? But that's a problem with internet discussion in general these days: it's all either blandly hitting "Like" on your way to the next ad or it's a fight to the death with the wrongest idiot who was ever wrong, with no room for respectful, productive disagreement in between. SE is still better in that regard than any bullshit social media site (probably because many of us are old enough to remember the internet of yore where not everyone was your friend and a thick thick skin was as important as a fast modem), but we're not as good as we used to be.

I don't think there's really anything we can do about that, though. Dinosaurs die out, it's the way of the world.

I think our problem is just a simple lack of participation. I don't know how to fix that -- I can tell you why I don't post and comment as much as I used to, but I'm just one user; if you want to know what everyone else is thinking you'll have to ask, well, everyone -- but I do know that building secret clubhouses for us to hide in and avoid each other isn't the answer.

I certainly didn't have any intention of having the two of you even give a moments thought to my post.

However, since the past cannot be changed, I will take the opportunity to offer my thoughts on this.

I'll direct my attention to Arrowhen first, as I offended him.
While the original negs started out as a "secret club inner circle", it didn't stay that way for long (maybe 4 years?). By the time SE 1 died, the negs were outed (more than once) and open to everyone. SEers, who knew of and participated, in the negs typically had dissenting views from the topside. Some wanted to vent. Others wanted to point out flaws in the topside posters views. Still others wanted to simply comment and make observations without being crucified by the topside mob. And further, (myself included) just wanted to make light of things, and put a humorous spin on whatever we could. With the onslaught of sock puppets, madpride, and a laundry list of other 'not so friendly' members joining and participating on SE, the negs did sort of degenerate into a 'clique' mentality.
So, I get it.
Mob rule does not equate to mob vengeance.

However, as far as I can tell, there are only 3 of us here that can even recall those playful days of yore. Sadly, those days are (kind of) gone.
