Same-sex marriage bill passes in Germany

quote [ "The German parliament, or Bundestag, on Friday passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriages in a snap vote that made it onto the agenda before the summer break after a surprise shift by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel herself voted against the bill, although it was comments from her that helped bring it about.

While some would consider the chancellor and CDU to have been wrong-footed, an alternative theory - that Merkel wanted to remove same-sex marriage as an election issue - has been floated." ]

I'll just share a comment I saw

I can get married -
Guys.
I can finally get married. They just finished the vote and it’s in favor of gay marriage and I am so freaking happy. I don’t think I’ve ever been as happy as I am right now. This is amazing. I’m just… blown away!

Apologies if I was unclear, my best friend is getting married. I just wanted to share how excited they were by sharing a comment they had put on Facebook. I will be sure to pass the messages to them.

While this is a great day for gays and lesbians in Germany, I'd like to draw some attention to another law that was passed on the same day the "marriage for everybody" act was passed: the "Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz". (Yeah, it's one of those German long words that consist of at least three nouns strung together.)
This is what it is about.

The tl;dr: From now on, providers of social media platforms are required to check content users post on their platforms for anything that could be a breach of a German law. As the right to free speech isn't as all-encompassing as it is in the U.S. (for example, you're not allowed to publicly claim the holocaust never happened, or that certain politicians deserve to be strung up for what they did) and there is a LOT of grey area regarding hate speech, this essentially shifts the responsibility for determining what is legal and what not from the courts to private companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter. If the companies fail to delete content that a court later recognizes as not lawful, they may face fines as high as € 50,000,000, so they will be quite enclined to delete anything that could even be remotely considered objectionable. And that's, in a nutshell, the most encompassing curtailing of free speech in the history of Germany.
