I had previously imagined that such basics of survivability (the "check first" subroutine) was hardwired into the decision logic of all animate creatures. Apparently not.

The real question is why does he need to be holding the book for testing?
If you think the book will stop a bullet, prop it up against a wall, shoot it for testing, worst case there's a hole in the wall. Worst case here? Dumbass gets himself killed. |

You know, like, people made careers of doing dangerous stunts since way before YouTube. But the idea is through careful practice and testing, and obsessive attention to detail, the actual danger can be minimized. Evel Knievel did not simply point his bike in the direction of the Grand Canyon and hope for the best.
