California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon shelves single-payer healthcare bill, calling it 'woefully incomplete'

quote [ A high-profile effort to establish a single-payer healthcare system in California sputtered Friday when Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) decided to shelve the proposal.

Rendon announced late Friday afternoon that the bill, Senate Bill 562 by state Sens. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), would not advance to a policy hearing in his house, making it all but certain the measure will not be acted upon this year. ]

Unfortunate.

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy.

And it's got to be done right. A health care bill that doesn't address "financing, delivery of care, [and] cost controls" isn't going to get the job done.

With entrenched interests of this kind of power I'm not sure it's not best to push political momentum to pass the law recklessly and deal with the details later. Single-payer would be earth shaking in it's restructuring of healthcare.

I'm not convinced that finance and delivery of care are details. And I think the power against it would just re-group and use the clean-up process to take the thing apart.

Plus if the bill is bad enough, its failings would be used as proof that single-payer is untenable.

I'm not sure those were problems that couldn't be addressed without killing the bill for another year.

All of this means nothing without buy in by the federal system.

Well that is disappointing. But it does need to be right.
