A $400 Smart Tea Machine Gave This Brit an Existential Crisis

quote [ When Americans are trying to rib me for being British, they tend to go for at least one of three jokes. They act like I love or have an intimate knowledge of the royal family, which I don’t; they mention terrible British food, which is fair, (though y’all invented spray cheese); or they’ll bring up tea. Haha, uh, cup of tea much, you limey? ]

"Yanks telling me how to do tea? I like Tazo better, nevermind that it's from Portland."

Not sure how a generally negative review of an expensive tea machine qualifies as an 'existential crisis'.

She is English, and the cognitive dissonance caused by the mismatch between her personal experience as a Brit and the marketing hype of the device momentarily made her doubt her very soul and the Meaning of Life(tm). If that's not an existential crisis, what is?

Finding out that the Meaning of Life was trademarked has given me an existential crisis.

I think that makes you a true American. (Or at least 100% non-bit'ish)

The british drink crap tea anyway. GF spends as much as a smoker on her Gao Shan tea habit.

Another toy for the rich. I will continue to use store brand tea bags.

Meh. Just ordered another batch of tetleys, 720 bags of basic tea.

It's that for the normal day, and Yorkshire tea for the rougher ones.

...it's an easy way to please a Brit gf. :)

Maybe in the UK Tetley is ok, but buying in America it's trash. Even worse than Lipton. Personally, the mass market brand I most like is Red Rose, which is actually made in Canada.
krupa said @ 5:33pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Why would it be trash?

Personally I prefer Tetley over Lipton or Twinings, and have tried quite a bunch of others. Not Red Rose, though.

I never realized how unrefined my palette is until now. I can't tell one brand of tea from another. I think that's a good thing, since it means I'm satisfied with any brand of tea.

PG Tips normally...though my wife has some Tea Forte Earl Grey if the day sucked. Australian friend visited and apparently they reflect some British roots -- probably drank a cup per hour or more of the PG Tips.

Despite actually liking tea, I'm Southern, and it gets damned hot out, so I'll also use whatever cheap tea I can find to make iced.

I sit here, having a cup (Red Rose, milk, 2 sugar) and consider, there are way more things to tease brits with than just tea...

Ask your british guests if they would like a beer and would they want it warmed up first..
