Anything that rewards you for interacting with it is a Skinner Box.

Exactly. The point is that the more info you give companies, the more personalized and addictive they can make that Skinner Box a fuckton of people now carry around in their pockets. That gives them the means to shape the things you think about during the day, and your opinions on them.

Don't get me wrong, I worry when my smartphone isn't in my pocket, but I got 4+ hours without checking it. Think I'm more worried I lost a $500 piece of tech. I've used most of the big mobile apps at some point, but when they start clearly manipulating me to no personal benefit, they get uninstalled. Mobile games start out great, then clearly move the incentive to paying for play...so basically encouraging me to play for 5 minutes every 4+ hours and no more. Like a weird form of loss aversion -- I was willing to play while there were rewards; playing but i don't get rewards for 4-24 hours? Screw it.

Every single mobile app manipulates you. Its just that some are more subtle (and/or evil) than others.

How often do you check SE?
LurkerAtTheGate said @ 9:12pm GMT on 13th Jun
When I get bored and/or need a break from work. May not check for 8 hours+, may check every 15 minutes.
