Rama’s Bridge: A Bridge Built By Monkeys

quote [ In the great Indian epic of Ramayana, penned several thousand years ago, author Valmiki speaks of a bridge over the ocean connecting India and Sri Lanka. The epic poem, that stretches for nearly 24,000 verses, narrates the life of the divine prince Rama and his struggle to rescue his abducted wife Sita from the demon king Ravana, the ruler of Sri Lanka. ]

There's this great animation about the Ramayana, from Sita's POV, interspersed with contemporary interpretation by shadow puppets, 1930 jazz, and parallels with the animator's own life.

As I recall, Rama had his buddy Hanuman the Monkey god organize the building of the bridge. I have a particular affinity for Hanuman, as he once appeared to me in a dream, after transforming from a stuffed sock monkey my grandmother made for me, into a wise, talking australopithecus. He's the only clearly non Judeo-Christian divine being I have personally met.

I'm certainly no expert, but from what I have read, Hanuman goes back at least three thousand years, to before Hinduism. I don't think he's really a King, just an outstanding (more divine than most people) person who happens to be a monkey. While he's most known in Hinduism, he also shows up in other Asian religions, too. In Hinduism, he's a paragon of strength and loyalty, devoted to Rama and Sita. Hanuman himself is sometimes considered an avatar of Shiva and is immortal. Sometimes he's referred to as being ugly, having had his jaw broken or burned as a child, but also being beautiful on the inside.

And how's your story with him? What happened?

He was captured by a British zookeeper and has been getting pelted with peanuts ever since.

That sounds bad Mech, but I would really love to have a chance to read the real story.

I hear he has a very pronounced widow's peak.
