GOP lawmaker: The Bible says 'if a man will not work, he shall not eat’

quote [ One lawmaker is citing a godly reference to justify changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Tex.) recently quoted the New Testament to question the strength of current work requirements. ]

How can a member of government...fuck! no words...

that's the phrase that keeps going through my head lately, but in most mediums I can't mention it without automatically muting for violating Godwin restrictions.

But goddamnit if that isn't an important thing to remember when talking about ending entitlements.

It's true that the bible is all about what a workshy bunch of losers the poor are. Jesus hated the lot of them.

Well to be fair, he was responding to an expert witness's bible quote defending the SNAP program.
Not that it still doesn't make him a dick, and as the article points out, completely wrong about who benefits from SNAP.

You joke- but that's actually the goal.
lilmookieesquire said @ 11:50pm GMT on 31st Mar
I'm pretty sure it's starving poor people.

It's a three-step program:
1. Starve government (with special emphasis on social programs that benefit poor people. Defense programs excluded)
2. Poor people starve
3. Profit!

It's ironic when a non-believer has to take a self professed born-again Christian to task for misusing the Bible in the service of what any reasonable person would call evil, but that is my duty today. You may have heard of folks in Congress parroting the words, "He who will not work shall not eat," or some variation of them. They are taken out of context from Thessalonians 3:10, in the most odious manner, to justify profiting at the expense of shaming and hurting the most vulnerable people in our nation.

I don't think the words in Thessalonians 3:10 mean what you think they mean

I Was A Hardcore Conservative: What Changed My Mind

I never listened to that kind of argument from someone who didn't actually believe in the Bible, because what is this, some kind of game to you? You think you found some loophole in my Dungeons And Dragons rule book? You don't believe the quote you are throwing at me, but you think I am dumb enough to fall for it because I am dumb enough to do whatever my magic book says.

Well yes, if you're a Christian you should be "dumb" enough to do whatever your magic book says. Otherwise, what's the point of it?

And I'm sure that jesus, if he existed and I agree to the terms and conditions of a fantasy book, didn't know what it's like living in the 21st century. Black and white statements like that are easily misconstrued. Kinda like the 12 virgins (or grapes, depending on what you prefer) waiting for you in heaven after killing infidels for extremist muslims.
