Are Baby Boomers A Generation Of Sociopaths?

quote [ A controversial new book argues boomers are beset with egotism, impulsivity and a shocking lack of empathy -- and they're leaving the world a worse place. ]

Hey foobar congrats on your book!
Now back to my evil boomer deeds. *Twirls pointy mustache*

It's all our parents fault. Greatest Generation, my ass.
sanepride said @ 2:16am GMT on 27th Mar
My parents were actually members of the Silent Generation. Didn't even know there was a name for this demographic, had to look it up.

That would explain my parents' horrible choices and how they were financially rewarded for being bad people.

As far as I know, I'm the only one with a twirly moustache.

Pics or it didn't happen.

You kind of look like the landlord in Godfather Part 2 that tried to evict the old lady and her dog.

Heh, maybe.

I was copying a picture my brother took and posted on facebook. I just happened to be wearing a bunny hug when he posted it so I thought, what the hell?

It's hilarious, but I can't say I agree with it. I chuckled when it was like (paraphrasing) "We don't have the hard paychological data to make sweeping generalizations about generations before baby boomers". I thought that was hilarious.

I've always gone with the whole "It was the first generation that didn't have a large percentage of it's uneducated population die in a massive war, so their priorities might be out of whack from not having that perspective."

Like the reason they exist is because their fathers went through war and was like "holy shit this is bad. I just want to go somewhere where I can drink some beer and pump out a few babies" and the govenment gave the survivors the land to do it- and they could because some much of the population died.

(and America was the last economy that wasn't totally rat-fucked by the war)

FWIW the boomers' were the first generation to resist going to war in significant numbers.
Seems like that should be worth something.
rylex said @ 1:21am GMT on 26th Mar
So what you're saying is the boomers were the first generation of sissies then?
sanepride said @ 2:29am GMT on 26th Mar [Score:1 Underrated]
If you call refusing to be cannon fodder, standing up to authority and choosing survival being a 'sissy', sure.

Yes, they bravely came to Canada and hid behind our skirts.
sanepride said @ 8:29pm GMT on 26th Mar
Dude, you are denigrating people who fled to avoid participating in an unjust war.
For a Canadian especially, that's pretty harsh.
foobar said @ 8:43pm GMT on 26th Mar
There's a difference between denigrating and popping a bubble of self aggrandizement.
sanepride said @ 10:20pm GMT on 26th Mar
Self aggrandizement, eh? Just pointing out some historical truisms.
foobar said @ 11:15pm GMT on 26th Mar
Ok, so am I then.
C18H27NO3 said @ 8:58pm GMT on 26th Mar
He said "skirts." 'cause canadians are a bunch of pansy, dress wearing, pussies.

Right?

Right?
sanepride said @ 10:17pm GMT on 26th Mar
Well to be fair, some Canadians have been known to wear kilts.
Otherwise, have no problems with people who identify as transsexual, or transvestite.
mechanical contrivance said @ 1:44pm GMT on 27th Mar
Or women.
sanepride said @ 4:02pm GMT on 27th Mar
What? There are women in Canada? Who knew?
foobar said @ 2:28am GMT on 26th Mar
For entirely selfish reasons, and then, once they were safe, they waged continuous war to keep oil on the market.

Sorry, no, that's not really worth something.

foobar said @ 3:05am GMT on 26th Mar
Oh, and also the biker movement stemmed from draft dodgers in WWII, so they weren't the first generation to resist going to war in significant numbers.
Kama-Kiri said @ 4:42am GMT on 26th Mar
Post-war biker clubs were formed by returning GIs.
foobar said @ 5:53am GMT on 26th Mar
Joining those who'd bravely refused.
sanepride said @ 3:00pm GMT on 26th Mar
Hmm... I think your definition here of 'significant numbers' is a bit wanting for um, actual numbers.
foobar said @ 7:33pm GMT on 26th Mar
Actual numbers are a bit hard to find, probably because this is something one would have to hide. That said, it looks like there were about 373,000 draft dodgers in WWII in the US, and there were only 648,500 total conscripts sent to Vietnam.

See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_the_United_States#World_War_II

http://history-world.org/vietnam_war_statistics.htm
sanepride said @ 8:26pm GMT on 26th Mar
Uh, no, what it says is
Draft evasion only accounted for about 4% of the total inducted. About 373,000 alleged evaders were investigated with just over 16,000 being imprisoned.[29]
Percentage-wise it's not exactly 'mass resistance', but I'd also mention that resistance in the Vietnam era was also huge demonstrations, with millions collectively protesting.
foobar said[1] @ 8:28pm GMT on 26th Mar [Score:2]
Well, according to bbqkink, protest is meaningless. You all just should have supported Johnson because Barry Goldwater was a special kind of evil.
sanepride said @ 8:30pm GMT on 26th Mar
I'm pretty sure bbq is another boomer. Sure that's who you want to be citing?
foobar said @ 8:32pm GMT on 26th Mar
lilmookieesquire said @ 11:12pm GMT on 26th Mar
That's the bloke?
sanepride said[1] @ 10:26pm GMT on 26th Mar
Also, just to set the record straight, no baby boomers would have been old enough to vote in the 1964 Johnson vs. Goldwater election.
