McCain's reputation as a 'maverick' seems to depend on how close he is to election time. Having just survived re-election (with no shortage of pandering and boot-licking to party and Trump), now he can afford to go full-maverick again.

Exactly. Yes, Trump's communications were monitored by the intelligence agencies, but that's doesn't actually mean anything since all communications in the entire country are constantly monitored.

Maybe he tanked the investigation on purpose so that he could avoid collusion at upper levels and a select committee would have to be formed?

Maybe he found out he was included as target of the investigation, when Nunes was part of Trump transition team.
