Another thing that can help a lot with smaller bandsaws is a hefty flywheel. It takes a few more seconds to get up to speed, but once it does, it's much less susceptible to momentary binding or density changes. Of course the balance of the wheel is very important, but with some patience and tweaking, even an old cast iron barbell plate off craigslist can work great.
