Highly recommend 'Weapons of Math Destruction' by Kathy O'Neil. A very accessible look at the growing use of data collection and algorithms to various ends in society. Encryption is certainly a step in the right direction but it's a roadblock. At least in the US, the founding institutions are not designed to address the information age. The rights of the individual and society relative to information have been addressed reactively through legislative and common law processes and the philosophical underpinnings are thus haphazard and evolutionarily slow. Unfortunately, as AI achieves ever greater successes in identifying our weaknesses, we can't predict what flaw in the system will be exploited by our data exposure. And our heroic system of checks and balances, has very few in place with regard to big data.

In the meantime, everyone is freely giving all their info (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and DNA (Ancestry, etc.) to private corporations.

Checks and balances don't mean anything to those who don't actually care about their rights.
