I can see why he's linked to Lovecraft, that's a very similar story to one Lovecraft would write. From gratuitous racism to primordial monsters.

Apparently they were frequent correspondents. The racism is ridiculous even if a bit more nuanced than Lovecraft's. He actually got better a bit better about it as he got older which some think was a direct response to hearing how ridiculous it sounded in Lovecraft's letters and perhaps wondering if that was the way he himself sounded.
