Greenwald: Beware of promoting unverified claims about Trump

quote [ Trump's critics can do him no bigger favor than using dubious, discredited tactics to attack him. ]

I have mixed views about Greenwald, but he makes some very good points here. An easy counter-argument might be 'well these tactics of promoting misinformation worked for Trump and the GOP'. Then we've got the whole 'stooping to their level' thing.

I like how he put credible in quotes, like the guy who released the information doesn't have a history and reputation for being credible. And that his livelihood depends on providing credible information.

Well, it was opposition research. The information wasn't meant to be credible (and thus didn't need to be verified.) It's simply information or stories that might be found about the man, this includes legitimate information as well as straight up bullshit rumour.

His career prior certainly depended on credible information, but we should not project that onto this considering this is not that work by a long shot.

Perhaps, though Greenwald's bigger point is that the guy is considered credible by US intelligence agencies (or as Greenwald ominously refers to them- The Deep State), and he categorically dismisses their credibility.
FWIW, this is the same argument Trump used in initially dismissing the report that Russia was behind the DNC hacks.

And spoil the only fun we get out of the buffoon?

Yeah, the thing is when I think 'fun' somehow Glenn Greenwald does not easily come to mind.

This is just more of the same bullshit...we have to treat Trump differently.

Conway: Look at Trump’s heart, not ‘what’s come out of his mouth’

'Well bless his pointy little orange head" I thought his kid was the retarded one. I am sick of this...why should we break decades of president, constitutional requirements, and long established law...because this guy is unable to comply?

Oh, as much fun as it was to make fun with the PP jokes this did give him a chance to do what you should expect a lot more of discount any news contrary to him as "fake news" and demonize the press that would dare bring it up as garbage...get used to hearing a lot of that.

And Greenwald is just grinding his own axe...spy bad!! But I didn't hear him when it was going the other direction politically. Makes wonder if his motivation is just spy bad or only US spy bad.

Right, this is kind of my problem with Greenwald- his reporting is very pointedly agenda-driven and there's a reflexive rejection of anything that contradicts his agenda. This is basically why he fled mainstream journalism (which he tends to denigrate almost as much as 'The Deep State') and started his own media outlet.
But he still makes some reasonable points here about the hazards of promoting unverified reports- especially the danger of diminishing the credibility of real, solid information. This is a principle I've always espoused- like when my old pal madpride spouted various conspiratorial accusations about the Bush administration. The problem now is that with Trump the rules have changed. Verifiable truth and accountability are now quaint notions. How exactly an opposition that strives for higher ground adapts to this new paradigm is the big dilemma.

That is what I have been trying to get at with a few failed attempts at Media post here. I don't think anybody has a handle on how to deal with this. And it is going to get a LOT worse when he takes power.

The attacks on the press will get worse...Trump himself will all but disappear...The surrogate press will start turning out the talking points...hard to tell just how bad but bad is a real good assumption.

Doesn't mocking the disabled tell you pretty much all you'd ever need to know about what's in his heart?

The True Story: Donald Trump Did Not Mock a Reporter’s Disability

By Catholics 4 Trump

Don't believe your lying eyes...his supporters will let him do anything...until they don't. And nobody has any idea when or what will cause them to stop. Common sense ...well forget that.

What keeps running through my mind is Trump has brought more scandal and disgrace to the office of the president than Obama did in 8 years and he hasn't even taken the oath of office.
sanepride said @ 9:34pm GMT on 12th Jan
Not a high bar, considering the Obama administration was easily the most scandal-free in recent history.
bbqkink said @ 11:59pm GMT on 12th Jan
Ok, nobody has brought this much....turmoil to the office before or even in their first 100 days...100 days... that just sent chills down my spine.
