The Trump Kompromat: How and why did we get here?

quote [ It is an extraordinary situation, 10 days before Mr Trump is sworn into office, but it was foreshadowed during the campaign. ]

I know, I know: the news is plastered everywhere, but this is a in depth report by a respected journalist with a lot of contacts within the US intelligence agencies and so I recommend reading it for context.

Judging by the press conference today, it will get messier before it gets mopped up.

Hold my beer.

Done. Sorry, I selected the category before hitting prep post which reset it.

I'm not sure Don has the capacity to even understand that he could be blackmailed. I don't think he has ever encountered a situation that couldn't be handled with bluster, bullshit, intimidation or cash. It's hard to threaten someone with something they absolutely do not think poses any real danger.
sanepride said @ 4:40am GMT on 12th Jan
Look at what we already know, what he's already gotten away with, and what he's gotten away with hiding, proudly. It's not like Trump has any shame or any conscience.

Back in 2013 at least he probably wasn't all that concerned, no. Even now, I honestly don't think the allegation of /what/ he did will move the needle all that much. He's survived rape allegations and "grab them by the pussy", I don't see that Russian prostitutes add much new to the mix.

I feel the far greater thing here is the connections his campaign had to Putin, which starts* to position Trump as a collaborator with the email hacks and all the Russian interference in the election.

* I mean for a public-opinion perspective.

Hitler was rumored to enjoy having women squat over his chest and shit and urinate while he watched. Also to be kicked by a woman as he lay curled up on the floor, somehow sexually.

I think he can totally shrug off the pee and prostitutes, but I don't think he really gets that he could potentially end up in prison for a long, long time.

Only losers go to prison.

As an aside, I'm pretty tired of journalists covering this story using the phrase "kompromat - or compromising material". Using the Russian word for it doesn't change the nature of the material, make the story more credible, or make you more authoritative. Compromising material is compromising material. Why isn't anyone saying "Trump is alleged to have hired prostitutka - or prostitutes - while in Russia"? It would be the same damn thing.

That is kind of silly, tho the CIA probably uses the same term. Spooks seem to like those made-up words.
hellboy said @ 10:42am GMT on 12th Jan
Michael Hayden, former head of both the CIA and the NSA, simply called Mr Trump a "polezni durak" - a useful fool.

It seems you are correct.

Lingerie means something different from underwear.

The point is this is such a common thing there is a Russian word for it.
hellboy said @ 1:57am GMT on 13th Jan
So is "blackmail".

It's the zeitgeist baby, or the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.
hellboy said @ 1:59am GMT on 13th Jan
Zeitgeist is a word with no direct equivalent in English, so it deserved to be adopted. "Kompromat" is nothing new, it's just a hip trend to try to appear "in the know".
captainstubing said @ 11:15am GMT on 13th Jan
Fair call.

I've been thinking for some time that his tax returns show him up to his neck in debt to Russian banks since no one else would loan to him anymore. It's the only reason for not releasing them. If he did, the truth would be out that he's owned by Putin.

“This method [of infallible prediction] is foolproof only after the movements have seized power. Then all debate about the truth or falsity of a totalitarian dictator’s prediction is as weird as arguing with a potential murderer about whether his future victim is dead or alive – since by killing the person in question the murderer can promptly provide proof of the correctness of his statement. The only valid argument under such conditions is promptly to rescue the person whose death is predicted. Before mass leaders seize the power to fit reality to their lies, their propaganda is marked by its extreme contempt for facts as such, for in their opinion fact depends entirely on the power of man who can fabricate it…In other words, the method of infallible prediction, more than any other totalitarian propaganda device, betrays its ultimate goal of world conquest, since only in a world completely under his control could the totalitarian ruler possibly realize all his lies and make true all his prophecies.”

Not everything Donald Trumps says is stupid...
