Grab the money and run!

quote [ A banker who managed the money of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has taken $5million (?3 million) and defected to Russia, a South Korean newspaper has reported. ]

I found this both interesting and funny, but just couldn't decide on the category.

Obituaries might be a fitting category.

I'm really curious about that actually. Obviously Kim Jong-Un is almost omnipotent inside North Korea, but once you've gotten out could he really do that much to you? I'd have to assume North Korea would have difficulty setting up covert operations of any complexity or depth out in the real world, North Korea would seem to lack the resources or the talent pool. They could produce a lot of motivated zealots, sure, and their armies march real nice, but with the state of NK's culture and education I doubt the North Korean James Bond would measure up to his international counterparts.

Also, if this banker was highly connected in Jong-Un's regime might he not have enough information to trade to earn some degree of protection from Russia, who presumably are pretty good at this sort of thing?

Well, Kim hasn't got Seth Rogen yet, but there have been NK assassins in South Korea. I'd think hiring a Russian hitman wouldn't be out of the question.

I dunno, there's still room on the plane from the previous post for Kim Jong-Un...

He doesn't get out much.

He doesn't have much money to get out much, from what I've heard.

Yeah, I've read some of those articles and NK covert ops in South Korea are easy enough to imagine. It's obviously much easier to infiltrate a population that looks and sounds like you.

As poor as NK is though, both financially and intellectually, I wonder if they could even successfully infiltrate China or Japan, let alone Russia or a Western nation. It just seems to me that a nation of delusional, information-starved slaves would not be a rich recruiting field for capable intelligence operatives, so developing or hiring advanced espionage assets might be out of NK's reach.

Crossing my fingers for Rogen though, stay strong brother.

So that was, what? 80% of NK's hard currency?

The South Korean government's estimate placed North Korea's GNP in 1991 at US$22.9 billion, or US$1,038 per capita....

In 2012, the Bank of Korea estimated that the real GDP of North Korea in 2011 was 24,793 billion South Korean Won (US$21.8 billion).[16] The same year, it published the following estimates of North Korea's GDP growth:[16][17]

"Looking at an Arirang smart phone."

North Korea has a smartphone? Oh, of course. It's a knock-off of a low-end Chinese model.

Or are the low end Chinese models really just a knock-off of the high-end North Korean phones?

5 *million*? Billion might be meaningful. Kim won't even notice a missing $5 million. He's not poor. His unfortunate citizens are.
Dumbledorito said @ 7:03pm GMT on 31st Aug
Yeah, but it does make you wonder what he'd do with him if he could get him back. I mean, uncle-executing is one thing. This is someone who literally took the money and ran.

I'm thinking he'd be strapped to the next missile tested over Japan.

The uncle could still be alive. This has been known to occur from time to time.
