Man Ignores Several Signs and Boils Himself Alive

quote [ An Oregon man who died after falling into a scalding Yellowstone National Park hot spring in June was looking for a place to "hot pot," the forbidden practice of soaking in one of the park's thermal features, officials said. ]

We have a contender for this years Darwin Award...

It's too bad the High on Life assholes didn't manage to do the same thing.

Ugh, and this is why I can't believe in kharma. If anyone deserved to boiled alive for being completely disrespectful douchebags it seems it is these people.

I kind of feel like they should be extradited and procecuted for these things.

Or he read them all and wanted to die in such a way as to traumatize his sister. She knows what she did.

This report is filled with the who's who of repeat offenders, including the Chinese man taking water for medicinal purposes.

I was on a cave tour of remarkably beautiful geologic formations a few years ago when a group of foreign tourists started breaking off delicate stalactites and stalagmites and putting them in their pockets. The guide freaked, and the tourists, who spoke no English, seemed stunned that it was a problem.

All the more reason to keep us immigrants in check?

I'm sorry my comment came off that way; it was not my intention. It was meant more as an observation on how difficult cultural assimilation can be. I once offended a new Korean friend in college by putting my feet in her lap. I had no idea how offensive that was in her culture. It took several days for us to patch things up.

If it weren't him, it would be some good American kids defacing the shit out of Native American artworks.

People, no matter where they're from, are assholes.
zarathustra said @ 9:20am GMT on 17th Nov
In re the defacing of Native American artwork, I have gotten the impression that this is not something to be laid at the feet of mindless teens but rather a deliberate attack by yeehawdist types. Am I wrong?

I think it should really speak to idiots that there's a reason they won't be retrieving your remains from most of the geysers, as it's not worth risking lives to get the bones out of human stew.
lilmookieesquire said @ 2:12am GMT on 17th Nov
That answers the medicinal drinking question I had
HP Lovekraftwerk said @ 2:25am GMT on 17th Nov
That does make an odd kind of sense... but if it has the essence of whoever died, and they're American, wouldn't that make the drinker stupid and possibly fat?
eidolon said @ 6:09am GMT on 17th Nov
Unfortunately, this isn't an uncommon occurrence. :/

Time for a mandatory PSA complete with horrible photos and videos for park visitors.

Darwinism can fix stupidity. Unfortunately, only on an individual basis.
machpi said @ 8:29pm GMT on 17th Nov
This sort of terrific ignorance happens all the time in national parks. People who are used to a sanitized Disneyesque experience where there is no real threat are completely unprepared and cannot even imagine a situation in which there is actual, real danger of something horrible happening.
