The Sheeran/Gaye example is a poor choice to spotlight for the very reason Neely points out earlier. It is not about rhythm, chord, melody. Sheeran invokes mood through a similar arrangement and hints of lyrical content. Not saying it's stolen, but the influence is just as strong as "Blurred Lines".
