Practical experience can sometimes inform scholarly debate. I have significant experience with horses, and lemme tell you, stirrup irons (to be technical) are a game-changer. White's main error, I think, is crediting Europeans with the invention of the stirrup. Asian cultures, most especially the Mongols, had been using stirrups for much longer, and deserve the credit for inventing them.
