Why Matchmaking Was a Dangerous Profession in The 19th Century

quote [ Before the invention of matches, making fire was a tedious business, so people often shared fires from already existing flames. Whenever a new fire had to be lit, a variety of different techniques were used, all of which involved rubbing one material with another to create sparks by friction. ]

For our field trip in elementary school, our 3rd grade class went to a matchmaking warehouse and toured the whole facility with no masks or protective gear on. Everyone got a free matchbox afterwards.

One of my classmates stormed off back to the bus before we even started the tour due to her asthma and the overwhelming smell. This was in the early 90s in the Philippines.

In hindsight, that tour was really dangerous.

We also went to a farm where they use the cow's milk that they produce to make milk bars (choco flavor) and sell it to local suppliers. We also went to a Coca-Cola Bottling facility and got free soda.
