The Golden Age of Shareware CDs

quote [ In the mid-late 1990s and into the early 2000s, you could purchase CD-ROM discs containing thousands of shareware apps, games, pictures, and otherwise. These CDs were gateways to numerous hours of cheap entertainment. Here’s a look back at their origins and impact. ]

Nice writeup. The better discs were indeed treasured in the 90s.

I never saw one of these that wasn't 99% totally unusable.

I found a great one at a Costco in the mid 90s. It was a multi-CD Mac bundle, with a gravitational simulator, a really janky dungeon-crawling FPS called Pathways into Darkness, a simple modeler/raytracer, a couple "hypertext experiences" that really challenged my attention span, and, yeah, like 99% of it was total dross. It left a strong impression on me though.

I had one of these that came on maybe 4 discs. I don't remember much of what was on it because I got bored with it pretty quickly.

I used to play a lot of the Ambrosia SW games. Looks like the website is officially dead.
