The US Military's Shady Recruitment Practices

Episode 137: Thought-Terminating Enemy Epithets (Part I)” | by Citations Needed | Jun, 2021 - Citations Needed is doing a follow up to the episodes they did regarding Anodyne language that media use to under play our military's operations. This time, focusing on the consent manufacturing language the media uses regarding the administrations that the US wants to make our enemies.

I mean, they're not wrong about the recruiting. It's just that out of all the angles, the propaganda angle is probably the most tame. Maybe look at how recruiters target specific impoverished communities to prey on vulnerable teens? Or how the juvenile justice system uses enlistment as a "get out of jail free" card? Or how foreign enlistees are told it's a pathway to citizenship, only to shaft them after 4 year? Or how recruiters falsify judicial records to get people enlisted when they shouldn't normally be, only for the enlistee to get fucked over when the background check goes through and it turns out that lying about a marijuana conviction is a serious offense? Or maybe the seriously fucked up shit, like rape and sex trafficking of potential recruits? The military cares when recruiters get caught, but otherwise does not give a fuck and lets them do whatever they want. Fuck recruiters, and fuck the military for enabling them.

Yeah, I found it to be rather light, more focusing on the latest outrages rather than stuff that's been happening for decades. My own experience enlisting was an endless string of lies from my recruiter, to the MEPS personnel signing me up an extra two years selling me on a rating that literally no longer existed, to the final months where they basically worked me to death out at sea.
