Students are failing AP tests because the College Board can’t handle iPhone photos

quote [ He Airdropped an iPhone image of his responses to his Mac and tried to convert it by renaming the HEIC file to PNG. Changing a file’s extension does not guarantee that it will be converted, but Spencer was still able to submit the demo test with no problem. ]

Ugh … websites! HEIC files weren't supported until 3 years ago by MacOS (and Windows?) itself, so this is kind of a new age problem.

A software missing the whitelist for an extension and then stalling in a loop while processing it is a bit unfortunate though.

I hadn't heard of HEIF file format before. I predict that it won't catch on because it doesn't have a memorable acronym like Ping or Jaypeg. Referring to a HEIF sounds like you're a close personal friend of Hugh Heffner.

The first four incarnations, sure, but I suspect the HEIF-5 might catch on!

MPEG should start a social media debate (by proxy) about whether it's pronounced with a short e or a long i. It will go viral then. Even people who had never heard of it will have strong opinions. Maybe especially them.

In a month, headline: The File Format That Has The Internet Flaming: What is HEIF?

Boom.

This kind of thing doesn't surprise me.
