Ask SE: At last, it is time to answer the most important question in gaming history - Is Guybrush's pants falling down funny or not?

quote [ Ron: This is like the greatest scene ever. It's like the pinnacle of humour. It's an un-toppable moment. Tim: But did he pull his belt off in order to dig? ]

Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer. Two legends of computer game design, but there is one question they cannot, will not ever agree on. Is Guybrush Threepwood's trousers falling down funny?

Tim: I didn't think that was funny. You thought it was the best thing in the whole game.
Ron: I did. And I still do. I actually use this as an example sometimes.
Tim: Of something you used to think was funny, and now realise is not funny?
Ron: No, it's like the pinnacle of humour. It's an un-toppable moment.
Tim: But, what, did he pull his belt off in order to dig? Why does that happen Ron? Now tell us.
Dave: It's because the game requires different levels of humour. You've got your sophisticated...
Tim: But why does his pants fall down? Does he use his belt to dig?
Ron: See, the problem is you're trying to justify it too much. It's just funny. Just role with it.
Dave: It's fantasy.
Ron: It's just a stupid computer game Tim.

Sorry, siding with Ron here. Also still preferring the writing on the first game!

Of course it is.

Personally, I think Guybrush trousers falling down for no reason is not just the funniest bit in Monkey Island 2, but is the funniest thing in the history of humanity. With the possible exception of that time I accidentally squirted 'tester' moisturiser on my girlfriend in a pharmacist.

The Guybrush scene is funny because (not in spite of) it is such a ridiculous non sequitur.

I am on Tim Schafer's side a little bit later though - Captain Dread is a great name for a Rastafarian pirate.

I spent three hours making a GIF. It's been a slow day.

It's been too long since I've played that game and I don't feel like spending the time it would take to reach that point in the game just to watch the scene, so I'll err on the side of caution and say it's hilarious.

I still reserve the right to claim Monkey Island 3 as the funniest. Maybe the jokes aren't the freshest, BUT the voice acting gives it so much more life.

???EL POLLO DIABLO???

Edit: Also, MI3 was the last Monkey Island game. There were no more entries after this one, sadly.

It’s funny because it denies Guybrush any chance to look cool or savor victory- because that’s not his character. He’s a klutz trying to be cool and failing. That’s what makes him relatable/lovable. The game is a parody of being a cool pirate. This is like when link gets his sword and holds it up triumphantly- link is awesome, his pants wouldn’t fall down. GT is no link and that’s what makes the game great. He trips and falls his way to victory. That gag is part of it.

Actually the cruelty of the script towards Guybrush is what's annoyed me in hindsight. It's maybe even more cynical than some of the Larry stories.

Ya. I really enjoyed one more than two. I actually really disliked the “they’re kids” ending. I thought GT had a hard time of it, but the reward is becoming a pirate. Same how Larry gets the girl of his dreams.

That they’re just kids kind, for me, ruined some of the magic of it

BTW: you might check out Nelly Cootalot which does a good job of deriving jokes from Monkey Island.

Don't know where I read this, but this plot was the backing of the original game all along. They were simply wise enough to not let it surface too conspiciously and leave more parts to the imagination.
