Freeman Dyson (1923–2020)

quote [ Nuclear physicist, polymath, disarmament pioneer and government adviser. ]

"Furthermore, he argued that models were not sufficiently precise to justify multi-billion-dollar technology ‘fixes’, such as the elimination of fossil fuels. The money would be better spent, he contended, combating hunger, illiteracy and disease.

He was supreme at two things, he said: mathematical calculations and writing."

DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.

I guess time will tell whether he was right or not on climate change. That said, even if we do get incredible tech to stop it, it seems like incredible pain will be felt between now and then due to the effects of climate change, so it is upsetting to see such a bright person support our current trajectory.

Smart people aren't smart at everything. It's kind of the opposite end of the Dunning-Kruger Effect, just because you're excellent in one area doesn't mean you're automatically excellent in other areas. And I'm willing to bet he was dead wrong on the climate crisis.
