How Your Laptop Ruined Your Life

quote [ More than the smartphone, laptops ended “work hours” as a concept. An office used to be a thing you went to for a certain number of hours a day ]

Yeah, a nod-piece. Still, many colleagues seem puzzled by me asking for a stationary machine and merely copying work stuff to my private computer when I need to.
Not carrying a laptop to and from an office (even your own!) takes a big weight off one's shoulders. Call it your private air gap.

I don't blame the laptop, I blame the opportunist capitalist industry leaders.

I just came to say the same.

But laptops’ biggest sin might be granting employers the convenience to treat any little hiccup like an emergency, no matter how inconsequential. Their employees don’t have much of a choice but to pull out their computers and get to work.

That's not the laptops' sin, it's the system where it lives. The gig economy/ workforce is just an extension of this concept.

I so agree, many jobs will gladly take advantage at being able to direct you and demand actions on your off time through your personal tech. Not only your off time at home but even your vacation time.

Who needs a laptop when you have RDP?

I much prefer using a desktop computer. I don't even own a laptop.
