Not quite so much this year, but in previous years Turbo Tax would literally hide the free version and almost force you to purchase the paid one. The only way you could've gotten the free one is if you actually knew where to look on their site. I almost missed it, but thankfully my wife had already filed hers and helped me find it.

My state doesn't have any income taxes, but TurboTax still offered to file that state for me for $50.

The tax prep companies were coding their sites so that search engines would not index the free versions. I don't think they're allowed to do that anymore.
