The HABIT Breaking Device | QuickQuestion

quote [ It's sort a Quickie, but more a QuickQuestion. ]

If this thing's really real and does what they say could it be Jerry Rigged to do inputs for VR?

It does seem like a dodgey fake promo video.

But something along these lines would be an interesting controller for VR.

The video is all fluff, but they're not saying anything that's not possible. I have a 4 channel(+1 optional) Muse EEG headband that's capable of using an app on my phone to train a very basic machine learning algorithm (Naive Bayes) in order to recognize two brainwave patterns (of your choosing; You hit the button and think a thought over and over again to train it.) as a demo for a very basic Brain Computer Interface switch. You can either turn the phone's light or vibration on and off depending on what thought you're thinking. It's not perfect, and occasionally hits with some false positives, but it does work.

I've also got software that can use the headset and machine learning to identify certain Event Related Potentials (ERPs) such as ERP P300 which is a shift in brain patterns that occur when you've been exposed to a pattern over and over again but are then randomly thrown an Oddball. The interesting thing about this ERP in particular is that it's being used to not only diagnosis ADHD, cure ADHD using neurofeedback exercise, but also predict behavioral shifts on ADHD medication before they happen. The medication typically given for ADHD isn't always effective for everyone. Unfortunately, it can takes weeks of being on the medication before the patient's behavior would change in a manner that the medication can be judged to be effective or not. However, doctors have found that in many cases the effectiveness of the medication can be gauged by having their patient perform this Oddball task, take the medication, wait 15-20 minutes or whatever, take the Oddball task again, and if the ERP shifts in a specific way it's a reliable predictor if the patient's behavior will respond to the medication weeks down the line.

Fascinating stuff.

Also terrifying, because yes this shit can be used in VR and when I get my coding skills up to task I have a workflow that I'm pretty sure can be used to train behavior at a thought level. I've already gotten my EEG headset working in VR, but beyond the attentive/relaxation dynamic like in the video, my math isn't quite where it needs to be just yet.
