El Paso Shooting: Walmart Edition

quote [ At least 15 people were killed in a shooting at a shopping center. ]

How about this? Is 15 more dead enough to generate outrage?

I feel like Eeyore right now, or maybe Marvin the Paranoid Android?

Why bother?

Not even 24 hours later, there was a mass shooting in Ohio this morning, killing 9 and wounding 16.

Killing 9 despite being helpful enough to start shooting relatively close to some first responders, who shot him quickly. Even in a literal best case scenario with "good guy with gun," 9 people died.

"Stochastic terrorism" is a recent term describing public speech that can be expected to incite terrorism, without a direct organizational link between the inciter and the perpetrator. The term "stochastic" describes the random, probabilistic nature of its effect: whether or not an attack actually takes place, when, and by whom is not under the control of the stochastic terrorist, but their actions serve to increase the probability that it will.[26] The "stochastic terrorist" does not direct the actions of members of a group, rather, they are an ideologue speaking over mass media to individuals with whom they are not affiliated as part of any form of organization.[26] According to an anonymous blogger posting on the Daily Kos, the speaker, whether intentionally or not, incites those with a combination of personality traits that leads them to violence. Since the speaker only focuses animus towards the victim instead of directly participating, they may escape culpability and the perpetrator may be labeled a lone wolf by law enforcement.[27][unreliable source?] The term has mostly been applied to domestic American incidents of violence.[26][28]

In their 2017 book, Age of Lone Wolf Terrorism,[26] criminologist Mark S. Hamm and sociologist Ramón Spaaij discuss stochastic terrorism as a form of "indirect enabling" of terrorists. They write that "stochastic terrorism is the method of international recruitment used by ISIS", and they refer to Anwar al-Awlaki and Alex Jones as stochastic terrorists.[26]:157

Hamm and Spaaij discuss two instances of violence. In the 2010 Oakland freeway shootout, Byron Williams was said to be en route to offices of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Tides Foundation, planning to commit mass murder, "indirectly enabled by the conspiracy theories"[26] of Glenn Beck and Alex Jones. As a left-wing example, they cite the 2012 shooting incident at the headquarters of the Family Research Council.

The "stochastic terrorism model" is a stochastic process, a random, model of those terror attacks intended by the random nature of their timing and targets to excite a generalized fear.[29] Nonetheless, lone wolf terrorists are "indirectly enabled by the conspiracy theories"[26] circulated in the mass media, especially by high status political or religious leaders.

We are so fucked I don't even know where to start detailing the ways.

I wanna move.

And I will.

The USA is fucked.

I don't see a solution within the time frame of the remaining portion of my life.

Pretty soon the rats will be jumping ship.

Where are you going to run to? When America drinks too much, the world gets a hangover. Better to stay and help us fix this mess. There are more of us, and there is strength in numbers.

(Also, are you calling yourself a rat? Not that there is anything wrong with that. Ben is great!)

I have places I can go to in order to ride out the storm. Only I'll probably die there.

If I thought we could fix this without violence I'd stay. But it is becoming increasingly clear that without it, we'll just be wallowing in shit for a long while until the whole thing blows up, and we become somalia. I can't see any non violent solution with fauxnooz and sinclair fanning the flames of bigotry and white supremacy.

Am I a rat? Could be. But in general I'd say that even rats can identify a sinking ship. People like dumpster, mcconnell, the asshole from ohio, and scores of others would probably bolt when it gets too hot and the boat is listing. Escaping responsibility and accountability.

America has been on a bumpy low-grade but definite ascent for much of the past 50 years. Trump is an anomaly that shouldn't be normalized. He was dealt a straight flush and people are assuming he's genius poker player. He is not. This can be overcome. No violence (as it is commonly understood) necessary.

If only there were some branch of government that would execute the laws. We could call it an "executive office". They could have officers to enforce the law. How does "law enforcement officers" sound? If we had those, they could make sure people breaking the law were apprehended.

But that's fantasyland talk.
