'Uber Was Supposed To Be Our Public Transit'

quote [ In a booming Toronto exurb, partnering with Uber was cheaper than starting a public bus system. But when it got too popular, fares went up. ]

Funny ways of transit evolution.

This is sad, but I really can't help but laugh. The company's entire business model is "become a transit monopoly by skirting regulations and fucking over our drivers." At multiple mass tragedies they've jacked up rates, exploiting people just trying to flee danger. I don't understand how anyone would willingly enter a deal with these evil fucks and not expect to get screwed over at some point.

My first thought was "why is anyone surprised by this?"

Does "public" mean something different in Canadian than it does in English?

In neoliberalism "public" is privatised but subsidized, until they can get away with not subsidizing it anymore.

I'm in DC, and the public transit authority is planning on an Uber subsidy for late-night workers who are working after the trains stop running. It ain't just Canada.

Instead of government subsidizing the service with taxes, they are subsidizing the fares instead. Which means the more people use it, the more it costs taxpayers.

To make the system self-regulating, the subsidy should be allowed to vary as (total budget / number of users). As more people use it, the per-ride subsidy is reduced, so less people use it, and the per-ride subsidy goes up.

This entire article basically boils down to "system working as intended".

I am shocked, SHOCKED I TELL YOU, that the pimps would lowball costs and then change the rules citing their costs once they had a market to themselves, based on the false initial bid. SHOCKED I TELL YOU! Pimps are usually so nice...job creators and all that...

Also, wasn't their IPO supposed to bring in $9,000,000,000?

Autonomous cars are going to change everything. A small fleet can serve an area and act as shuttles to mass transit. I imagine that they almost never park.

You know what happened when facebook came out? Everybody loved it. Then they started selling your private data. Unintended consequences when coupled with capitalism.

Expect the same with autonomous cars. They will be hacked, people will die, while others make bucket loads of money. Bank on it.

If you don't pay for it... you are paying for it some other way. Facebook can know all about my dumb life.

A fundamental problem is space– if you put a busload of people in single cars, they will just clog up the infrastructure. Plus, self-driving cars would be around on the street even without any passenger.
snowfox said @ 7:48am GMT on 13th May
I'm thinking about lower population density areas. Buses don't run through suburbs because it doesn't make sense to, but driverless cars could, ferrying the suburbanites to their nearest rail station.

A lot of the US is largely inaccessible by bus. The stop is far away and it adds 2 hours to what would be a 20 minute commute by car.

Paired with this, we need grocery stores next to places of work moreso than residential areas because of the population density there and the need for more frequent shopping trips to make up for having to make smaller purchases that can be carried easily.

Who says they need to be cars? Why not self driving vans that hold 8 or 10 people? One of those can drive around a neighborhood picking up people and then drive them all to the train station.
