The art of DJing: Jeff Mills

quote [ After so many years you learn how to pace it. I don't sweat, hardly ever. Because I've conditioned myself to not sweat so much. When it's very hot, very humid, I move less. Because I've been in many cases where it's just a disaster, I can't touch the mixer because it's soaking wet, with humidity dripping down, I can't grip the line levels and stuff. Sweat dripping, the headphones and the whole thing just becomes a mess. So over time I can't control that. ]

Talking about DJing is often as obnoxious as discussing Espresso machines but this interview somehow transports the relaxed craftsmanship of a veteran. Ok, a bit obnoxious maybe.

Also: no vinyl, interestingly.

are you really a DJ if theres no disc for you to jockey?

You don't need a disc to wave your hands in the air and pretend to push buttons.

Digital Jockey

ETA: I thought I was joking, but apparently that's really a thing. Yes, I'm confessing to not being in-the-know as it would have seemed. I don't know why. Stop typing.

It was all down hill once DJs stopped whipping the records with crops.

Vinyl is mostly for scratching, or general turntablism. Club DJ easier to use CDJs or the like. I recall one piece of equipment that was a "record" that sync'd to digital playback so you could try to "scratch" with is, but more just useful to align your timing between songs.

If you want to see why you use vinyl, watch Mix Master Mike perform.
