I have found myself waffling on Orwell in the information age for some time. Data is being used in unhealthy ways in formerly free societies by all sorts of extra-governmental organizations. We're well past time for rethinking the appropriate use and management of citizen information systems by governments in free democratic societies.

I feel like everyone has forgotten that there are millions of Muslims in "reeducation camps" that thousands of them die from the treatment of these prisoners. China is not just a different government getting to the same place. They are a worse then then the world of 1984. They have no soul liberty, they have no monitary liberty. I think everyone should delete their Facebook account but they aren't the same thing as China.

China is a totalitarian regime. I certainly haven't forgotten that, nor did I mean to imply that information systems used to reinforce totalitarianism are a good thing. I meant to open a discussion about bettering government in democratic societies through the use of information systems in a more thoughtful way, something that fear of control prevents free societies from broaching. The discussion is a bogeyman, meanwhile our data is being absorbed and used in myriad ways with no systemic oversight or structure.
