Nike's self-lacing shoes bricked by app update

quote [ Owners of the newly released $350 Nike app-connected Adapt BB self-tying shoes have taken to the Google Play store to complain that an update left their fancy kicks bricked. That's right, the self-lacing shoes reportedly no longer connect to the accompanying app — essentially transforming them into regular old shoes. "app wont pair with left shoe," reads one such review from Feb. 17. "paired with sneakers right after unboxing then completely crashed after last update." "the first software update for the shoe threw an error while updating, bricking the right shoe," reads another. "needs serious work." ]

It's a boring dystopia for people who are lucky enough not to bear the brunt of it.

I wonder if there's a word for bored and stressed out.

I can't wait until the "internet of things" really takes off and I can have remote updates brick every object in my house.

It has amusingly been pointed out to me (a lead dev) - I can't name a single person in IT in an advanced position (lead dev, architect, engineers, etc) that adopted IoT in their own home, including some who work specifically building IoT devices.

That reminds me, need to buy more cat food.

Eh, with proper VLAN'ing you're fine. Mind you, the internal-facing cameras don't get Internet privileges, and can only talk to the NAS, so I guess I'm not exactly the IoT poster child, but telling Alexa to turn the lights pink impresses the fuck out of dates.

We're sorry, but the smart bricks your house is built of have been bricked by their most current update. Please reset your house to factory defaults by poking a paperclip into the small hole under the foundation.

I'm afraid that the new version of 'Windows for windows' no longer recognises your glass. You should have bought an Apple House, which is a single featureless white cube except for a propitiatory cat-flat.
conception said @ 7:19pm GMT on 21st Feb
Apple House also has no doors. But all your friends want one.

Zion Williamson, now this? Not a winning week for Nike.
snowfox said @ 9:32am GMT on 22nd Feb
I... what? Why does anyone need self-tying shoes outside of a severe handicap? When did slip-ons and velcro straps stop being sufficient?

I am often concerned there are children on my lawn.

Because if you suck at basketball it's clearly because your shoes aren't adjusting to the game.

No one needs this product, but Nike figured they could make some money by making and selling them.

As someone with back problems making bending difficult and a love of the Back to the Future films... DON'T TAKE THIS FROM ME
